High School Curriculum
continued

Initially, in Year 7, students are arranged in mixed ability groups across all subjects, with setting in Mathematics and English taking place at the end of the first half term. On average, class sizes do not exceed 26 and in practical subjects, group sizes do not exceed 20. Students are taught and learn in a variety of ways from whole class to group work to individual study. The availability of technology gives access to a wider range of teaching and learning than might usually be found in schools.

In Years 8 and 9 departments have the opportunity to start to further group classes by the ability of students. Some subjects continue to use mixed ability approaches according to the nature of their subject.

In Years 10 and 11 students are able to make limited choices about their curriculum but all students will continue to follow Mathematics, English, Science, ICT, RS, PE and Citizenship to GCSE or equivalent level. Students are able then to select further courses from a range of other subjects. This range changes from year to year and is explained in an options guidance booklet available from the Academy.
